There is no easy way to say this. South Carolinians understand empire. We also understand why it is important to confront empire. It is difficult to imagine a person better prepared to confront empire on behalf of all South Carolinians than Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
Why do South Carolinians understand empire? Because, as one of the first places Europeans settled, empire and conquest was the basis for our being. As a major participant in the enslavement of Africans and the slaughter of native peoples, our state continued to follow a path of empire. As a modern state with many military and international corporate business interests and a growing entertainment foundation, South Carolina serves modern day empire as well.
Congresswoman McKinney has taken the bold step of confronting empire since her first days in the Congress, and has been punished every step of the way. The Democratic Party in the state legislature targeted her for defeat by putting her into a district with another incumbent Democrat. They and their financial backers have supported candidates against her in primary after primary. Instead of supporting a winning candidate, these Democratic leaders helped beat her in the primary.
The Green Party and other Cynthia McKinney supporters need to step up and give to her campaign so she can win the Green Party nomination, and secure federal matching funds.
We also need and want support from those who are undecided, or even support another candidate, but believe Cynthia McKinney's unique voice must be heard in November.
